Heritage /// Inheritance Shorts
2019-22 (ongoing)
A new series of research-based ethnographic short films exploring the diverse minority ethnic cultures of northern Vietnam.
In 2019, filmmaker Harvey Bunegar relocated to Sapa – a provincial town in the northwest highlands of Vietnam. Fascinated by the cultural diversity of the region, Bunegar set out to meet with people of different minority ethnic backgrounds in the hope of bringing their stories to the world. Working in partnership with social enterprise Ethos - Spirit of the Community, a series of research-based ethnographic short films was envisaged.
The resultant series, Heritage Shorts, captures something of the intangible cultural heritage of northern Vietnam - highlighting traditional craftsmanship, religious rituals and practices passed down through the ages. Each film is the product of meaningful exchange between filmmaker and subject. Often beginning with few preconceived ideas, the team discussed with the participants on what aspects of their culture they valued most and what traditions should be preserved for future generations.
In line with the vision of the Open Cinematic manifesto, the Heritage Shorts series will form part of the permanent exhibition at Heritage Centre Sapa – a new cultural institute for the northwest region. The centre aims to promote the culture and handicrafts of local ethnic minorities in order to generate new livelihoods and connect artisans with the global market. The centre will also facilitate community engagement in the arts through on-site classes in batik, embroidery and music.
While the Heritage Shorts series seeks to document longstanding traditions, a parallel series is currently being developed. The forward-looking Inheritance Shorts focuses on new lifestyles and ideas in minority ethnic communities in response to a rapidly changing world.
The first volume of films in the Heritage Shorts series will soon be available as a dual-disc DVD and Blu-ray collection. To pre-order a copy, please use the contact form on this website.
