Rice is life…

In the northern highlands of Vietnam, the landscape is defined by cascading terraces of wet rice fields that are fundamental to the lives of the region's farmers. For the Hmong, one of the major minority ethnic groups of mainland Southeast Asia, rice is life. Harvest documents the struggle of one splintered family to provide for themselves, as two septuagenarian grandparents shoulder the responsibility of raising their grandson, Ker. While once-golden paddy fields lie fallow in winter months, the coming of the spring rains sees green seedlings rise again from fertile soil. Yet despite the metronomy of this cycle, questions remain over what the future may hold.
